New race, same week count. The 2021 World Mountain & Trail Running Championships (“WMTRC”) was rescheduled to November 3-6, 2022 due to COVID. The race will be in Chiang Mai, Thailand and I will be joining 9 other athletes as part of team Cambodia!
The NYC marathon conflicts with the travel and race schedule, which means I will have to cancel this year’s race and defer to next year. I should be able to register for the 2023 NYC marathon since I have not previously canceled. Race registrations are not cheap and non-refundable, but traveling to Thailand and representing Cambodia is an opportunity of a lifetime.
There is still a lot I want to unpack from the announcement, but I’m still trying to find the right words. In the meantime, it was a solid week of running. The weather is finally better which yielded some great workouts.
Week 10 Training Details:
Monday (September 5, 2022)
- Easy miles to start the week
- No excuses after taking 2 days off while I was in New Orleans
- Easiest way to get back into a routine is to get started, simple as that
Tuesday (September 6, 2022)
- Back to hill repeats! This time I was chasing Matt, Carli, and Mimi
- Got the progression I wanted between the first half and second half (1st half at Marathon Pace (“MP”) to Half Marathon Pace (“HMP”)
- At 7 miles for the morning, I felt like I had more energy for a 2nd workout but didn’t want to get greedy with a 5K on Thursday
Wednesday (September 7, 2022)
- Recovery hills at Flag Pole Hill
- By far the hilliest route I’ve seen in Dallas
- Great recovery route while working those hamstrings and glutes!
Thursday (September 8, 2022)
- The morning started with some easy/relaxed miles before the evening 5K
- Started the 5K by jogging to Reverchon Park for a 1-mile warm-up
- Goal time was 18:30 (5:57/mile) but I was not in 5K shape by any means
- I went out trying to keep pace with Jennifer Pope but couldn’t get the legs to turnover after the Blackburn hill. Gave it a good effort and finished with a sub 19, which I’m very happy with (the cold beers at Ice House helped too!)
Friday (September 9, 2022)
- Rest day
- Legs felt beat up in the morning
- It’s been a while since I raced a 5K (first race since Boston I think) and it showed
Saturday (September 10, 2022)
- 2 hours long run with some progression
- I joined Matt Barron in his workout. The goal was 8 miles of warm-up, 6 miles starting at 6:50 with 10-second cut downs each mile, and 2 miles to cool-down (~16 miles)
- Everything felt in control until about miles 3-4. I was about to get in my head and wanted to fade back
- I just smiled and kept the legs turning over. I reminded myself how beautiful the day was; 67 degrees at 6 am was a dream come true after a brutal Dallas summer
- Got the workout done and was able to run a 5:54 mile for the 6th tempo mile/mile 14. This mile was faster than my last mile during Thursday’s 5K. A much-needed confidence booster
Sunday (September 11, 2022)
- Easy evening miles
- Slept in after a long day of enjoying college football
- I don’t mention sleep during these blogs but I am terrible about getting consistent rest during the week. Half of the weekdays I operate on 4-6 hours of sleep. And I use the weekends to catch up on my lack of weekday sleep
- I wrapped up the week with 51 miles and a nice improvement over prior weeks
