2022 NYC Marathon Training: Week 7

“Comparison is the thief of Joy”

My mileage has been lower than expected but I’m able to stay consistent in the 40 miles per week range. It’s easy to look back and see where my training was a year ago to 2 years ago when I first joined Train Pegasus. My one mantra this whole block is to not wallow in my own self-pity. Does it suck to not be as fit? Absolutely! However, if I’m going to say “progress isn’t linear” to everyone, I better mean it too.

The right leg soreness/tightness has been more bothersome. I wasn’t able to get it looked at this past week but making it a priority next week. There was so much going on with work and life I lost sight of some priorities. It happens. All that matters is 1) not repeating the same mistakes 2) and staying consistent. I was initially targeting a sub-2:50 goal, but I need to make realistic goals based on my training.

This is the part where you would hear me adjust my time. And normally, I would but there is some news I am waiting to share. There is a possibility I may miss this year’s NYC marathon. I can’t confirm anything until next month, which creates some issues with my training schedule. I will be sad to potentially skip this year’s NYC marathon (fortunately able to defer to next year), but a closed door means another door opens. And I can’t wait to share the next racing opportunity. One hint: it’s a completely new racing experience for me!

Bonus hint: you could make an educated guess based on my past Instagram story posts or even taking a closer look at my training 🙂

Week 7 Training Details:

Monday (August 15, 2022)

  • Switched Monday to a cross-training day and got a nice bike ride in
  • Weather permitting, I’d like to continue this until cooler temps finally arrive

Tuesday (August 16, 2022)

  • Tried to address the imbalance issue by doing road mile repeats on the usual tempo route
  • Marathon pace miles felt solid and was pretty pleased
  • Even happier to see a cut down in the 400 reps too

Wednesday (August 17, 2022)

  • Returning to Holy Hills Wednesday was no joke
  • Not an easy recovery day but the “hills pays the bills”

Thursday (August 18, 2022)

  • Completely slept through my alarm. One of the super rare times I had no recollection of hitting snooze
  • Ran some easy (and humid) miles on the Katy Trail

Friday (August 19, 2022)

  • Full Fast Friday = Slugfest Run
  • I was absolutely zonked after the fast. I could barely survive the 3 mile run and it felt like I was seeing stars
  • It did make dinner taste more delicious
  • It was a great mental test but next time I’ll save the fast for a real rest day

Saturday (August 20, 2022)

  • Kept the long run at manageable distance
  • After the 10 mile lake loop, I decided to take a shot with cutting the pace down
  • Last 3 miles were 6:57, 6:39, 6:31. Marathon pace felt a bit choppy but mostly due to the tightness on my right leg while compensating with my left leg

Sunday (August 21, 2022)

  • I wanted to go out to the trails but I was so tired
  • Decided to sleep in more and mustered up the willpower to complete 4 miles for 45 miles on the week
