2022 NYC Marathon Training: Week 8

Didn’t get a pic from last week’s run but here’s a throwback to last year’s long run!

The mileage is still lower than expected but I am still consistent. Another week at 40 miles in the books! I am content with last week considering how iffy my right leg has been feeling. I was to visit Steve White at Dallas Run Clinic.

I highly recommend anyone experiencing any running issues see Steve. He is very knowledgeable and most importantly, he thoroughly explains concepts. I enjoyed learning how different muscle groups affect running form and identifying weaknesses.

This was a huge sigh of relief. It was a lighter week on the workouts but I was content with the finish during my Saturday long run. I am still in limbo on the November race plan, but I am keeping my long run around 2 hours. This will help build my endurance through the fall racing season, regardless of which race I run.

Monday (August 22, 2022)

  • Rest Day
  • No cycling due to rain

Tuesday (August 23, 2022)

  • First time doing hill repeats and I felt it on the back half
  • Happy with my solid effort, but I think I left some energy on the table
  • Hill repeat days are generally light on mileage and I like to add one or two tempo miles at the end
  • I passed on Matt Barron’s offer on a marathon pace mile, but I’m not backing down on the next one

Wednesday (August 24, 2022)

  • Late recovery miles
  • Skipped the morning run due to my Physical Therapy appointment
  • I wanted to hear the results before proceeding with running
  • Fortunately nothing serious but I need to be careful with how I ramp up training

Thursday (August 25, 2022)

  • Easy miles instead of tempo since my Wednesday run was so late.
  • One of the few times I didn’t pay attention to the total distance. I was just short of 7 miles lol

Friday (August 26, 2022)

  • I heard Matt Campbell talk about moving his long run to Friday. His long run was 60 minutes relaxed + 60 minutes at Goal Marathon Pace (~5:50/mile or ~2:33)
  • My training isn’t near where it should be for my original goal pace and I needed easy miles anyways so I decided to help pace on the bike.
  • I used the Strava app to help track the pace but I was slightly off on a couple of miles (and I dropped bottle exchange).
  • It was a fun time pacing Matt and I look forward to pacing on the bike again

Saturday (August 27, 2022)

  • 16 miles total with 3 Winsted loops + 3 miles at sub 3 MP (6:50 or faster)
    • Each Winsted loop is 2.68 miles with 140 feet of elevation gain
  • It has also been a while since I have done Winsted loops and it shows
  • The first tempo mile was a struggle. I needed to pause about halfway to gather myself, but I got the long run done with a nice progression through the tempo

Sunday (August 28, 2022)

  • I missed both options to run 1) Nomad social run and 2) trail run with Rhett Hostetler. I paid the price and decided to suffer in the afternoon heat
  • I did loops of a hill route around Lakewood. Let’s just say the Loving hill wasn’t so lovely…
  • It was much-needed vert for my training
