2021 WMTRC Training: Week 12

Third week of hitting 50 miles for my weekly miles. I’m happy with the consistent mileage but too many of my miles were concentrated on the long run (20/51). Needless to say I was very hungry after the long run!

I took 2 rest days: my usual rest day on Monday and Sunday. I stayed up too late after taking a late nap last Sunday and a late surprise storm (1-hour downfall with 40+ mph winds). These are excuses and I need to be more accountable.

While I need to focus on my upcoming trail race, I am also doing something I try to avoid – looking ahead of schedule. I would enter week 3 of an 18-week half marathon training block for the Aramco Houston Half Marathon. I’ve committed to no more marathons the rest of the year and focusing on the half marathon.

I think a break from marathon training will be good for me. Half the race won’t mean half as difficult. I would like to keep my weekly mileage between 55-65 and peak around 70-75 miles. I will also focus on 2 quality sessions during the cycle: track/tempo on Tuesday and long run workout on Saturday. The main goal is to PR (1:21:54 or 6:15/mile) but the stretch goal is sub 6:00/mile pace (1:18:30). I believe 2 big sessions will help increase my threshold to handle sub 6:00/mile effort over the duration of a half marathon. I’m still in the early stages of developing a detailed training plan but I will provide updates each week!

Week 12 Training Details:

Monday (September 19, 2022)

  • Rest day
  • Also needed to prepare for a big week of work. Several deliverables and strict timelines are filling my calendar and workload

Tuesday (September 20, 2022)

  • I made up for the rest day with an early start with Matt
  • I did my best to keep up by running 800M reps at his 1KM pace
  • I made it through 6 before switching to 400M
  • 4 miles of track is more than usual and I want 4-5 miles (excluding tempo miles) to be the new standard for Houston Half training

Wednesday (September 21, 2022)

  • No friends to join me for flag pole hill so I went to Luke’s social run

Thursday (September 22, 2022)

  • the Second week in a row I have overslept for the Thursday run
  • Included 3 MP miles in the middle to keep the run time shorter

Friday (September 23, 2022)

  • A good start to a Friday with early miles
  • Glad Matt was feeling sluggish because I was moving slowly too

Saturday (September 24, 2022)

  • No fast miles but the heat made this 20 miler a beating
  • Crossing my fingers that this is the last hot week of fall!

Sunday (September 25, 2022)

  • Rest Day
  • Woke up at 2 am sharp to watch the Berlin Marathon (what a race by Kipchoge! 2:01:09 and a new world record!!)
  • I fell asleep between the 15KM and 25KM mark but I caught the end
  • Unfortunately this was also the end of any normal sleep because I slept through most of the morning
